Welcome and Congratulations! What an exciting time becoming a first-time parent is. The joy of motherhood (and fatherhood) coupled with that sudden, frantic realization that you have no idea what you’re doing and you now are responsible for the health and wellbeing of a tiny little human! No one has to tell you that when you become a parent, your life is forever changed. But what can be welcome to hear is that this overwhelming feeling is normal and goes away with time. There is so much to learn with parenting, so much to discover together with your new baby. Being a first time parent means doing lots of research trying to figure it all out. This is a hectic but joyful occasion. There are so many decisions to make, including where should baby sleep! Bassinet? Baby Crib? Co-sleeper? Organic vs. non organic?
Take a deep breathe. You’ve got this!
Don’t expect a lot from your partner or from yourself in the first six to eight weeks. The most important things that you should focus on once baby comes home are looking after yourself, trying to get some sleep whenever you can, and enjoy bonding with your baby. As a mother myself, I have been where you are. That is why I created Guide to Baby Cribs blog, so that parents can have more information about the best baby sleeping cribs and products on the market without having to sacrifice precious hours searching for information. I’ve done the research and compiled it for you to help you keep more of your precious time for other things.
Adjusting to your new life
You will have many new feelings after bringing baby home. There will be many high highs and even some low lows. You and your partner might be on an emotional seesaw during the first few months after the birth of your newborn. You will most likely feel more exhausted than you have ever felt before in your life, and you most likely will also be a bit stressed out.
Newborn sleep patterns can be an unexpected shock to the system for parents. Some parents adjust very quickly and for others it can take months or even close to a year before settling into a routine that feels manageable. While one baby move love sleeping in his or her baby crib, another may only want to sleep besides mom and dad in a bassinet. One of the most important things that you can do to help baby sleep is to choose a good sleep environment. This includes choosing a crib, or a crib alternative such as a bassinet , minicrib or playard; choosing the right fabric for bedding, and any addition soothers such as a crib mobile.

Choosing a Crib Mattress – Your baby’s safety is probably one of the top things on your mind right now. And the fact is, that the crib mattress is one of the most important purchases you’ll make when putting together your nursery.
Infants will spend on average 16 hours a day in their crib, which makes safety and comfort a big concern. Not all crib mattresses are safe, and there is some misleading information out there about what makes a baby crib mattress safe.
To help you in your journey for a safe mattress for your baby, I’ve put together a guide and list of the best crib mattresses.
How to Purchase the Best Crib – The baby crib itself is certainly another big decision that will effect how well and safely your baby sleeps. It’s best to buy a new baby crib rather than a used one.
With a pre-owned baby crib, it may not be up to current safety standards. For example, drop cribs that were popular years ago are now a known safety hazard for your baby and something that you should avoid. This is just one of the many helpful tips that you can find throughout this site to help you pick the best crib for your baby.

Choosing the Best Material for Baby’s Crib Sheets
A very common question among new parents is, “What kind of bedding is best for my baby?” You’ll want to provide crib sheets that are comfortable, safe, and seasonally appropriate.
Babies have very delicate skin. Newborn skin can be very prone to allergens and infections, both of which can be caused by things present in crib sheets. The synthetic materials found in some fabrics can cause rashes and irritation that can be make baby uncomfortable and make it harder for baby to sleep soundly. Furthermore, since most new babies sleep 12-16 hours a day, you want to ensure that as much of that is as uninterrupted and healthy as humanly possible. After all, you want what’s best for your baby and quality sleep is a top priority.
Babies also have trouble regulating their body temperature. Some types of crib sheets are more appropriate for the warmer summer months while others are a better fit during the colder months of the year. So not only do you want to take into consideration if the sheets are synthetic or organic but also what type of weather the sheet is most suitable for.
Stick with the Basics
Feeling overwhelmed? Don’t be! Stick with the basics when it comes to choosing safe baby nursery items. What does baby really need to sleep? While Pinterest is filled with all sorts of inspirational nurseries with hanging art, layering rugs, wall decals and other things, your baby only needs a few items.
Whether in a bassinet, moses basket, or crib, baby will need to sleep somewhere. You’ll also need a mattress (this is usually sold separately from the crib), sheets, and something to bundle baby up in when cold such as a swaddle or sleep sack. Lastly, you can consider a crib mobile to help soothe baby to sleep.
All other items including crib skirts are unnecessary. Furthermore crib bumpers are unsafe to use, and cuddly toys and blankets should stay out of the bed until baby is much older and out of the danger zone of SIDS. For more safety guidelines check out this booklet on nursery safety.
